For the youngest, they're simple chew toys; for the oldest they're balancing rings, shaking noisemakers; and for the in-between they're a little of everything. My 9 month-old twins play with this toy in all kinds of ways. They're not at the point of stacking the disks/rings yet, but they do a lot of other things. For example, they throw the rings with the aim of trying to get them to roll on their side. Most of the time they don't succeed at that but sometimes they do, and then they might have to crawl to retrieve them. This is great for developing motor skills and it shows that they understand something of the concept of a wheel. They also get exercise.
We also play together with this toy in different ways. For example, I can sit across from a baby and throw a disk in her lap and then she throws it back in my lap and so on. We move onto different colors and sizes. They can do this at 9 months old and it's fun for them. They also trade the rings between each other and I can't say I understand what kind of game that is but they like it.
We clean the rings every night along with all the things we clean (there are so many). But these are easy to clean and this is a very durable toy.

First she learned how to take the rings off, then how to put them on, then wearing the rings like braclets, then taking the rings off by "dumping" the stack, then pretending to wear the base like a hat, playing peek-a-boo with the rings over your eyes, etc. Some people mentioned how they don't like how the pole is tapered so all the rings won't fit if placed on out-of-order, but I like that feature. . . I feel like she will learn eventually how to put them on in order. It was refreshing to have a toy without lights, sounds, and batteries and be just as entertaining (at least at this age.) I guess there is a reason we all had this toy - kids absolutely love it. My one year old daughter has been playing with it for six months and never seems to grow tired of pulling the rings off the stacker, walking around the house with them, chewing on them, hitting them on her other toys etc. etc. As she is just learing how to actually stack them, I am seeing hours and hours of more fun. We have bought a lot of toys for her this year - most of them a lot more expensive than this- yet the rings are far and away her favorites. Best money you will spend in the first year for toys.

My 9 month old has been playing with this stacker since he was 6 months old. This is a simple, classic toy that's easy to clean in a sink full of soap and water. My son's teething so everything gets chewed on and drooled on. He has a a more expensive stacker with blinking lights and music that doesn't hold his interest for quite as long. The fancy stacker has star shaped "rings" that were heavier and harder for little hands to grip. I think the key to this Fisher Price Rock-A-Stack is the tapered shaft that allows for easy ring removal and the light weight rounded rings that's easy to grip. Also, the red ring with the silver interior is a rattle, which my son enjoys. The base has a curved bottom so the tower will rock before it topples. I guess that's why classics never go out of style.

I started looking for one of these for my son when he was, I think, somewhere between six months and a year. And at that point they were nowhere to be had - maybe that was when they were changing the top ring from all red to half red, half clear with beads inside?
At any rate it was hard to find and I think the effort involved in tracking one down compared to how much my son actually used/liked it made it seem to fall a little flat.
If you can find one easily and if you can find one cheaply - why are the Fisher Price basics seeming to sell for twice their store price on this site??? - it's not a bad toy to get at all, especially for the 1 and under set.
My biggest complaint about this toy is it is NOT like it was when I was little. I remember it being taller and having more rings, and that's not just one of those memories where things seemed bigger because you were smaller. I have seen old ones - alas, not with all the rings present - and they were taller and clearly originally had more rings. There are gaps when all the rings aren't present, due to how the center tower gets bigger as you go down it so as to coax the child into stacking correctly - that's how I know it was supposed to have more rings.
In the end we got more play out of a Melissa and Doug wooden stacker. I think my son liked the bigger range of colors and the fact that it didn't force you to stack in any order, since the pole and the inner holes of the rings were all the same diameter.

I truthfully do not feel that this toy is for a 6 month old (or 7 month old's for that matter). His only interest in this toy is to chew on it or to shake the top ring to make it rattle. I didn't expect him to do more than that with it when he received it, and I'm not sure at what age he'll be able to use the toy properly, but eventually I think it will be a good learning toy.

Then I noticed that he could fit the yellow cylinder (attached to the base that you stack the rings onto) all the way into his mouth. So I was concerned for his safety that if he fell forward he could lodge it into his throat and obstruct his airway. I have contacted fisher-price and they are picking up the toy from my house for a full refund. I thanked them and bought something else, the Melissa and Doug stacker made of wood and lead-free paint. Fisher-price, shame on you for not being upfront about this. Get used to the question because American consumers are getting educated about this possible very dangerous plastic in our children's toys, baby bottles, Nalgene bottles and lining 95% of the canned food and soda we drink.
