I bought the Melissa and Doug Easel and this companion set to go along with it for my nephew. There are no drawbacks. The brushes match the cups. The cups are spill proof. It has everything your child will need to paint, draw, or write up a storm. This was a well thought up and executed product.

My mother got the easel for my 3 year-old for his birthday so I grabbed this set to go with it. The plastic trays work very well to catch any drips or chalk dust, the paint cups have a great slanted insert that works to keep the paint drips in the cups and the paint is just the right thickness to minimize drips. The dry-erase marker dried up relatively quickly, but it really wasn't the big attraction for my son anyways.

This easel set is a must have! The paint cups come with a durable cover to help keep the paint fresh, as well as a topper that helps keep the paint in the cup for messy toddlers!

I bought the easel that this product goes along with, as well. This is a great product and a must-have if you own an easel. The paint lasts for a very long time in the no-spill canisters that comes with it. Also, it is great for young children as painting builds their confidence and self-esteem. It also teaches them to express themselves more freely. I am definitely not dissapointed in this product!

I bought this when I bought the Melissa & Doug Easel and I'm so glad I did! I was going to buy the supplies separately but then realized I would do a lot of driving to probably not save much money or have the right pieces. These fit perfectly and are really designed well!!! They are great!

The best part about this set was the paint cups. It fits perfectly in the easel and they have lids so you don't have toss out the leftover paint. I've spent lots of money on getting some decent brushes and the ones from this set are durable and thick enough for good textures. It also helped that the handles had matching colors on them so they could remember which brush belongs in what cup so we don't end up with black 5 minutes into the project! I had a small palette that I didn't use anymore and my kids ended up making up some great colors with it.

I bought this for my 2 year old. While the markers are still tucket away and the paint has yet to come out (saving for a rainy day activity), he loves the easel and the accessories. Ohhh and for those looking for tips on how to get crayon off the chalk board or the white board. The magic eraser works wonders! I had to google some options and this was the one I found to be the best. Others required baking soda and soaking, blah, blah. The magic eraser only required that I get it out of my cleaning cabinet :)

The paint is great, the paintbrushes seem high quality for children's brushes. The cups are genius.
I can't think of anything negative about this at all, except maybe a more than one dry erase marker would be nice.

I was initially apprehensive to purchase this item after reading some of the reviews. I am glad I did buy it though. The paint cups are awesome with good lids. I did not notice a strong smell to the paints. Good chalk selection. I agree with other reviews that I wished there were more dry-erase markers (only 1 came with it). I purchased the 12 pk of Expo low-odor markers along with another dry erase eraser from Staples. It is recommended to not use the same eraser for both the chalkboard and dry-erase board. My dtr actually loves the dry erase aspect best. Overall a great product for the price I paid (under $[...] for it and I must say that I would not have paid any more than that).

We were glad we bought this kit to go along with the standing easel. It came with everything we needed for our 4 1/2 yr old daughter to begin enjoying her easel. She somehow managed to smash the tip of the marker in, but other than that, everything seems very durable. The size of the paint brushes are great for her little hands. The paints does have an odor, but nothing that can't be tolerated for the time she paints. We haven't had trouble with erasing the chalk on the chalkboard, but if we do, we will follow the recommendation of another reviewer by re-coating it with blackboard paint.

THis was a great choice for a Christmas gift for my grandson who is almost six. The two-sided easel allows his little sister (age 4) to get involved at the same time. WIth a chalkboard on one side, and painting/coloring on the other side, they can engage in all kinds of artistic activities. DOn't forget to get the Easel COmpanion set with all the artistic materials they'll need!

This is the best art supply kit I've ever seen on the market. There is an abundance of paint as well as drip-proof containers for the budding child artist. I bought this for a two-year old who also really likes the chalk. Did I mention that the kit also includes paper?

I bought this as a Christmas present for my 3-year old God-daughter and she ABSOLUTELY LOVES IT!!! I usually try to purchase educational toys for children but this time I wanted to add an element of creativity. We often wonder what's really going on in their minds,especially at the age that they are beginning to absorb everything their environment/world, and I thought it would be interesting to see her interpretation using the colors, paints, chalk etc.
Also loved the fact that the chalk board is magnetic for alphabet, numbers, etc.
Would def get this gift for another child ..lovely ..and LOTS OF FUN!!

I just recently purchased The Melissa & Doug Easel and Companion set for my little girls and it's FANTASTIC!!! They love it it as do I. The quality for the price is great. It's a really nice looking unit too. I was pleasently surprised to see the quality of the companion set items. The brushes are super nice. They don't look cheap at all. The eraser is most definly made of very good material. I can't get over the quality of the chalks, it really has surpassed my expectations on quality even colors are nice. The chalks are not as messy as I thought they would be and seem to last long too! My girls have been playing with this daily especially the chalks. They play with this easel more than they play with their other toys. I feel very good about my purchasing this set. I'm so glad I did and kind of wished I had gotten it sooner. I am also very thankful I have found this on Amazon before I had bought one of a lesser quality Easel and companion set items from a local toy shop!

Melissa & Doug really know how to turn out some great toys to bring out the creativity in kids. If you spent the money on the easel (and that was a great bargain if you got it on Amazon!) then you absolutely SHOULD get this companion set.

It's wonderful how the brushes are the perfect size for the paint pots and all of it is just so -- well -- really teriffic!

The BEST part is watching kids use it! Wow!!

We bought this for our daughter's 3rd birthday a month ago along with the easel and she LOVES it. My husband put it together with relative ease and had it set up for the next morning so she could start painting and drawing. The supplies are great, although I wish it came with more markers! The paintbrushes and cups are very sturdy and while I might buy some different paint due to the staining we had the first few nights, they're all high-quality items. We're very happy with the product!

The companion set is an absolute must if you have purchased the Easel. It comes with 4 colored cups with lids that hold the paint with coordinating paint brushes. It makes it very easy to put away. You don't have to clean out the cup and waste paint, you can just put the lid on until next time. Having a matching brush help my daughter with her colors and from mixing colors. The chalk is great too. It is in a triagle shape which is easier for little hands to hold. The dry erase marker is weak, I suggest buying a pack of them from Staples so that you have many colors not just one. My daughter is 2 1/2 and loves this toy, she uses it at least once a day.

I purchased an easel for my granddaughter for Christmas. I also purchased pads of easel paper and the deluxe companion easel set from Melissa & Doug. The purchases arrived in speedy time and were overpackaged so there was no need to worry about anything breaking. The paper and art supplies arrived just as advertised. I am so happy that I bought the companion set. My granddaughter was able to use her easel immediately rather than running to the store for crayons & paint & brushes. There's much less mess because each paint brush has a cup with matching color lid. My daughter-in-law says it was an excellent purchase!

This was purchased (with the easel) for a 2 1/2 year old and he loved it! It is sturdy and designed to grow with him. The accessories are so well thought out...the paint cups and brushes in matching colors help him to keep the colors straight so he doesn't end up with mud (pretty much) with lids so they don't dry out...with center holes for keeping the paint in the cup..and a nice sturdy tray. The paper roll is easy to work, the chalkboard was easy to write on (problem from old reviews has been solved)

Although I was originally only looking to purchase the paint cups for my daughter's new easel, I realized that we needed brushes and paint too. When you start to add it up, this kit was a great deal. The extra roll of paper will come in handy down the road (our new easel came with a roll of paper). The chalk, dry erase marker and eraser are all a bonus. Such a great kit for a great price.

I bought this companion set of brushes, paints, etc. to go with the Melissa & Doug Easel for my three year old for Christmas. She's quite the budding artist and was branching out with her canvases...on my walls! The brushes are sturdy along with the spill proof cups with lids. Note: in order for the cups to actually be spill proof you can only fill the cup half way, which is fine with me since it gives an endpoint for my daughter when she runs out of paint. The bottles of paint weren't as big as I thought but paint is a minimal cost and we just needed something to get us started. The roll of paper was worth the money and is fairly thick and good qualit; it holds the paint without tearing or bleeding through. I think it was worth the price I paid and would recommend it.

Great products for the M & D easel. Only problem was the dry-erase marker. On day 2 of playing with this pen, my children pushed too hard on it when writing on the white board and pushed the ink part back inside the pen, rendering it useless. Bummer. Wish there had been at least 1 more pen in the pack.

So, I bought the M & D easel and of course I had to buy the companion set..it's a neccessity. I like the functionality of the set, the paints stay fresh in the containers for a few days so you dont have to waste the paint the kids haven't used at the end of easel time. The amount of chalk is great, the colors of chalk are good for color recognition. There is only one dry-erase marker which is not cool if you have more than one kid because even though there are two sides, they usually end up 'creating' on the same surface until somebody colors in someone elses area. Also, another eraser wouldn't hurt either since there is the chalk sid and the dry-erase side. Overall, the companion set is as its name suggests, a great companion to an easel, specifically the M & D wooden easel.

We purchased this to go with an easel and it's fantastic. The containers for the paint are amazing and perfect for my 3 year old. When he finishes painting, we just snap on the lids and wash the brushes for next time. Each brush is color coded to the paint, so he knows which one they need to stay in. We did have to buy some extra dry erase pens, because one was not enough. The chalk colors are fantastic. Lots of options to choose from. Definitely a great value.

This is a great set! The best thing about this set is the paint containers! No more wasted painted- not only are they "spill proof" and have an easy way for kids to dab some of the paint off instead of wasting it, but when you're done painting for the day...just snap the top on and it's ready to go the next time you want to paint! Works great! The color coded paint brushes are a nice touch too!
We do not have an easel, so we just bought the kit for painting fun. Highly recommend.

I don't actually have the M&D easel but wanted a set of paints, brushes and no spill containers. We also happen to have a chalkboard (the M&D small one), so even though I didn't need the chalk I figured it would get used.

The no spill containers are great and they have covers (which I wasn't sure about). They're bigger than I was thinking they would be. There are 4 coordinating paint brushes- 1 for each container. I'm also happy with the paints.

Chalk set comes with quite a few colors and are higher quality than the thinner chalks our small M&D chalk board came with.

Purchased with the easel. Great set. I wish it came with a full set of colors of the markers, not just the blue. Otherwise the paint cups are great as you do not waist any. I put small amounts of each color in the cups about 3 weeks ago and they have not dried out as long as the lids stay on when not in use. The bottles should last quite a while at this rate.

We purchased this set to go with the Melissa and Doug easel, and the only complaint I have (and it's a minor one) is that it only comes with one (blue) dry erase marker. Beyond that, the items in this set have exceeded my expectations. First, the paints really are washable (note--my kids paint outside, so I can't comment on whether or not the paint comes out of carpeting). The paint is just the right consistency--not too thick, not too thin--and the colors look just as vibrant when they dry as when they are wet. The best part is that the paint washes right off of my kids' hands. The paint cups are genius! I love the inverted lids that help decrease mess and also keep the paintbrushes in place. Clean-up is so simple--I just rinse the brushes under cold running water and wipe the cups and lids with a damp paper towel, and they're clean! Any splatters of paint that land in the paint tray or on the whiteboard can also just be wiped away with a damp paper towel. Snap the storage lids on top of the paint cups, and the paint doesn't dry out in between art sessions. The chalk is colorful and sturdy--if it can stand up to my three-year-old, who tends to be hard on her crayons and sidewalk chalk, it can stand up to anyone! The included eraser is also of very good quality. This is a great set and I'm very glad that we purchased it. When we run out of paint and chalk, I will definitely buy Melissa and Doug replacements!

I am editing my review several days later to include an additional comment regarding the chalk. Another reviewer mentioned that the chalk creates a lot of dust. Our experience thus far has been that the green chalk, in particular, creates an amazing amount of dust. I've had to teach my kids to clap the eraser after they erase their drawings, otherwise the next time they go to use the eraser, it just smears green chalk dust around on the chalkboard. I'm not changing my overall rating for this set, though, since it is still a great value. We just may end up purchasing another brand of chalk when our Melissa and Doug chalk runs out.

My daughter received the Melissa & Doug art easel as a gift for her 3rd birthday. I purchased this companion set since it had ALL of the stuff she'd need in ONE box. I can't imagine her using the easel WITHOUT this set! It's a no-brainer since the set comes with the individual paint cups for the paint, which include a hole in the center for paintbrushes AND a snap-on lid to keep the paint from drying up when not in use. Clean up after painting essentially involves just rinsing out the brushes! I have my daughter use one brush per color, so it's been a breeze to keep the paint cups clean and the paint colors from getting mixed into a yucky brown. The chalk has been fun, too, and the paper for the painting is as easy as could be! The whiteboard is fun for my daughter, too. All in all, this is an EXCELLENT set and should be purchased along with EVERY Melissa & Doug art easel. Can't say enough great things about it!

My son received this as a gift to go with his Melissa & Doug Deluxe Standing Easel, and my son loves it. Comes with seven items:

1) Washable paint in four colors: red, blue, yellow, green...my son has learned how to mix colors for orange and purple...and the paint is washable but you still might want to purchase a Melissa and Doug Artist's Smock.

2) Paper roll is nice, but kind of thin...depending on how your child paints, it may soak through a little.

3) Dry-erase marker in blue; I bought an Expo Low Odor Dry Erase Marker Set so my son would have different colors, but the one that comes with the set works great & wipes off easily.

4) Felt eraser. We use this one for the chalkboard side of his easel, and I bought another eraser for the dry-erase side of the easel.

5) The spill-proof cups are awesome. The lids screw off so you can pour the paint in, and they have flip tops that can be open while in use. There is a hole under the flip lid that accomodates the paint brush, and the area around the hole slants downwards so any run-off slides back into the cup and not over the edge.

6) The four paintbrushes come in red, blue, yellow, and green -- helps a child keep the colors from getting messy.

7) The chalk is awesome, but not sure why they have black chalk in the set -- you can't even see it on a green board. The chalk goes on and wipes off easy enough. The design makes it easier to hold, especially for littles ones learning how to hold a writing instrument correctly.

I wish the set came with two erasers, and more than one dry-erase marker, but otherwise this is a perfect set.

The Deluxe Easel Companion Set was definitely a good set to purchase to go along with the Easel, (make sure you get it along with or before the Easel, or your child will have to wait to get started until it arrives!). If I could change something about the set, it would be to have the company try formulating the paint to a kind that doesn't smell so bad and so overpowering. (It smells for hours throughout the house whenever my child paints.) I will definitely be buying the refill of my paint from a different source! Another very minor thing, would be that I feel that the paint brush bristles would be better if they were bigger and fluffier. Less drip, and better for 3 and 4 year olds to handle paint with.

My 20 month old grandaughter uses this in her high chair when painting. The no spill cups REALLY work... they are awesome! The only small issue I have is that the paints themselves are hard to get off of skin. They come out of clothing if you wash it our immediately but a dark shadow of the painted area stayed on my grandaughters skin for a few days. I will probably look for paints that are different but I would buy this set again just to get the cups!

Rather than repeating many of the comments already mentioned, I just want to write here that the paint alone is worth the cost. Despite the fact that our 5 year-old works on a large, plastic mat, he still manages to get paint on our kitchen floor (brand new). Luckily, the paint wipes off with ease with a damp cloth - no scrubbing or rubbing whatsoever. Same with the issue of getting paint on his clothes - it washes off in the laundry. We're also sometimes lazy about washing the paint containers so the paint dries up, but if you mix in a little water (I swear, even weeks later...) then the paint is like new again, so we've never really had to waste paint. We've had this set for about 12-14 months now and we haven't yet had to buy a new supply. My son uses the set moderately and I've been surprised at how long the paint has lasted.

We're not into the chalk that much and we did also buy our own dry erase markers to supplement.

This is a nice set and a good value for the money. We purchased it to accompany the M&D easel. The paint cups fit well and the brushes are heavy duty for preschool-age children. The only complaint I have is the paint has a strong odor that lingers even after you put it away.

I understand why a white board is fun for children but a grease marker stain is impossible to remove. It would be nice if this set came with a washable grease marker instead.

This companion kit for the easel is great! I bought it, along with the easel, for my 3-yo grandson. The only question I have is why was there only one erasable felt pen for the white board? I expected at least 3 or 4 in different colors???? That's my only complaint. Otherwise, it's a very good set.

This is a nice sturdy easel, and was pretty easy to assemble. It has two nice trays to hold paint, brushes, markers, et. The paper roll is great, it sits in the middle of the easel and rolls over the top, very convenient. We bought this at Christmas and my 5 year old is really enjoying it.

We got the Melissa & Doug Easel Companion Set a couple years ago when we purchased the Melissa & Doug Deluxe Standing Easel and we really like it a lot, except for one thing.

First, the positive: the brushes are really high-quality and durable. The chalk is great, with nice colors and easy to hold because of the unique shape. The containers are really handy and very clever. They have two lids, one that you can use when you are painting, kind of cone-shaped, inverted with a hole....so you can dip your paintbrush into it, and easily wipe off the edges on this cleverly-designed lid. Then of course a top-lid that goes over that, when you are not using the paints. The eraser is good-quality and durable. The dry-erase marker is standard. Since there is only one, I bought another set with more colors.Expo 7-Piece Original Dry Erase Organizer Kit

The only negative: The paints look vibrant in the containers, and still look bright when you first put them on paper. Unfortunately, when the paint dries it is faded in color. At least, this is our experience when using the Melissa & Doug Easel paper. By the way, you can get 3 replacement rolls here on Amazon for a really good price. Melissa & Doug Deluxe Easel Paper (3 pack bundle) So it's fine for everyday art, but if you want to do something special as a keepsake, like we did, be prepared for the colors to be more muted than they look. Since I'm not an art expert by any stretch, I don't know if it's because of the paper or the paints....but it definitely wasn't the result we were looking for.

Overall, I would still buy this set again. As with all Melissa & Doug items, it is high-quality and durable, and includes quite a bit for the money. Just wanted to mention the paint issue above, in case it matters to anyone else.

And by the way, the Melissa & Doug Deluxe Standing Easel is a fantastic purchase. Our child was 3 when we got it, it has grown with him to age 6, and will easily last another couple years (height-wise for the child, not in durability. As far as durability, the easel will probably last forever!) Hope this has been helpful for someone.

My father bought the easel for my son's 2nd birthday...he did not realize the companion set had to be bought separately which was a disappointment...I bought it for him and he has used it a lot since we got it...I recommend parental supervision using it as it can cause a huge mess for 2 year old..older kids would be fine...

The paint containers are wonderful. Having the matching paint brushes makes it easy for my 4 year old to know where they go. The chalk is nice.
However we had to buy another eraser and wipe board markers as the kit only comes with one of each. The paint worked great, as did the roll of paper.

I bought this companion set along with the easel for my granddaughter. When I opened it I discovered that one of the paint bottles had broken during shipment and half the blue paint was outside of the bottle - what a mess. Also, when I opened the chalk it broke easily - before I ever gave it to my granddaughter to use. The paint pots are very sturdy and should work very well. It comes with only one white board marker, so I'll have to purchase more colors separately. I also had to purchase a paint smock and drop cloth separately. I'm sure my granddaughter will enjoy it when I give it to her for Christmas.

I had read some reviews of this before I purchased the set and they said that the paint smells strong. It does say non toxic, however that is really hard to believe after I took a whiff of it. I love Melissa and Doug toys but I am not impressed with the paint for that reason. Other than that my child loves painting and using her easel. No regrets there.

The product is fine but the customer service is non-existent. My son got the Melissa and Doug easel and the companion set for his birthday, but two paint containers were missing from the delivery of the companion set, and the chalk was broken. I tried to call customer service to see if the company would send the missing pieces, but the wait was absolutely endless, so I decided to use the Doug and Melissa website instead. I sent one message asking for new chalk and the missing paint but got no reply. After a couple of days, I sent an email, and again got no reply. So, the buyer of the gift paid full price but we are still missing those two paint containers, the easel stands unused, and Doug and Melissa have declined to rectify their mistake.

We bought this when we ordered the easel. It is an ok starter set as it has most of what your toddler will need to use his easel.
Then marker arrived broken - the point pressed in the first time we touched it to the whiteboard and we had to throw it away.
The chalk is horrible - it makes a lot of dust. We will definitely buy another brand ASAP.
The paint cups seem very nice - this is the only item we will probably keep.
The paintbrushes are only ok - the hairs come off after only a couple of uses. It is very nice that the brushes are color coded with the paint and the paint cups.
The set only comes with one eraser - we had to get another for the whiteboard. The one it comes with works well for the chalkboard.

We bought this for my 3 year old to go with the Melissa and Doug easel. It comes with one dry earase marker and the point collapsed into the pen the very first time my quite gentle daughter used it. The chalk comes in pretty colors but makes such a dust storm I would not buy these again. I'd add up the cost of the paints, the spill free paint containers which are great, the paint brush and the roll of paper (which is also optional. I think clipping single sheets is easier) and compare costs. I think buying just the items you want seperately would have made more sense.

Alex paints are absolutely NOT washable. My child spilled some paint on my carpet. After the professional tried cleaning my carpet, I had to pay someone to replace the section with the quote "washable" paint. Alex brand paints cost me almost $200 that day. Spare yourself the potential aggravation and buy CRAYOLA.

Don't buy this kit. I bought it with my daughter's easel and i'll have to get her something else.
The paint cups are spill proof true but too big.
The paint is awful and comes with only 4 colors. it smells, is thick and low quality. I prefer by far Crayola paints that comes in small jars.
The brushes frankly are very bad.
There is only one eraser -- at this price ( i bought it $30+) an eraser for the chalk board could be added.
The chalk and the rest of the kit are okay.

Summary: i do no recommend this kit. If i knew about the quality, i'd have bought items separately.

This says the paint is washable, but it won't wash out of your carpet. Even though the box says it won't spill or drip on your carpet, well, it does. From the brush it drips down onto the carpet, because the paint's not thick enough to stay on the brush. What they should do is INCLUDE THE DANG DROPCLOTH IN THIS KIT INSTEAD OF MILKING PEOPLE FOR MORE MONEY. I had no idea the drop cloth was even available, because I bought this product in the store. The green paint is runny and will drip off the brush and onto your carpet and once it does, it won't come out. Our white carpet is now green, even though we've tried three different carpet cleaners. We'll probably have to replace the entire carpet. Thank you, Melissa and David. Try making the green paint a little thicker, maybe make it actually washable, and include the dang dropcloth. If you buy this, make sure you move the easel outside, because you will regret it if you don't. NOT WASHABLE, NOT DRIP-PROOF, NO DROP CLOTH INCLUDED.

I bought the Melissa & Doug Deluxe Easel Companion Set for my daughter's 3rd birthday and the Melissa & Doug Easel. I opened the paints and poured in all of the corresponding cups and she started painting and I started to smell thermaldahyde. The smell was horrible. This was the same smell of when I was in cadaver lab in college and I wore double gloves since it smelled so bad. I threw all of the paints away and the paintings into the outside garbage. I could still smell the thermaldahyde on the kitchen table where I put her painting after she was down. I washed the table with wood polish and kitchen cleaner and still smelled of thermaldahyde. I definitely would not recommend the paint from Melissa & Doug. The box says non-toxic, but it is also made in China. It did not smell non-toxic.
