I purchased this for my grandson who has all the "noisy" toys a child could ever need. This item was purchased to help him focus on fine motor skills without the competition of distraction. The product is colorful and well made - sturdy enough to take years of toddler wear and tear. The only negative is that the top isn't attached with a hinge,so parents have to keep track of the shapes inside. I highly recommend this item.

I bought this shape sorter for my son this past August when he was almost 2 1/2. He's been using it now for around 8 months and we've had none of the problems mentioned on the other reviews. Our lid is sturdy, doesn't fall off under regular use (unless you tip the box), no paint has come off the shapes, and only the correct shapes fit in the holes. Someone said any shape fit into any hole, which I can't understand unless they have a totally different product. I guess M&D may have had a run of defective products recently or maybe decided to make them cheaper since I bought it, but I just wanted to add a positive review here because ours is great and has held up well to lots of use over the past 8 months.

4/4/09 I wanted to add to this review that we've now had this sorter for two more years and now have another child playing with it. The edges of some shapes are showing a little wear, but no chipped paint or any other issues. Our 18 month old is sorting the simpler shapes and stacking them like blocks. We still love it!

We got the Imaginarium sorter, which was a little cheaper, only has 12 shapes... otherwise seems exactly the same.

I agree it is too difficult for a little child to figure out... and the lid doesn't stay on.

As for difficulty - well, it's a toy he can grow into. My baby is 13 months and he just got this for Christmas yesterday. Eventually I want him to have the Tupperware one - IMO that is an essential childhood toy. For now, I thought we'd get him the FP Brilliant Basics one, but DH insisted on this one over that, as it had more shapes and it's wood... he likes wood. OK, whatever. :-) So my baby is much too young to be sorting shapes just yet (I'm embarassed to admit that even I found this a little challenging... thinking I could just fly through putting everything away but some of the shapes are very similar so I had to think about it, even at the age of 27...) ... however he loves to run around the house with a block in either hand... bang the blocks together (or off of other things)... gnaw on them... and drop them in the cube. So for now he is getting about as much out of these as he would out of any wooden block set... which isn't a bad thing. He'll grow into the shape sorting feature in time, and toys that are fun over time for different reasons are money well spent.

As for the lid issue... we plan to get some self-stick velcro and put small pieces under the lid and in the notches on the cube so the lid stays on. It should work well and be a cheap and easy fix. I agree these things should be designed with more thought to the lid staying on... you have to flip the cube to put the shapes in the sides and having to hold the lid in place is frustrating.

All in all, a great toy. I didn't expect this to be his favorite but what do ya know... I guess the classic toys are still the best.

My son got this for christmas, he loves it. He will sit for a long time (5-10 minutes) and play with it. He has learned all the names for the shapes (including hexagon) and will patiently sit and put them in the correct places. I will admit that the lid does come off easily....it just sits there. and some of the pieces are very similar, but this doesn't keep my son from enjoying it...it actually presents more of a challenge for him to pay attention to the smaller differences. And when he is tired of that he enjoys pouring all the blocks out and putting them back together. As for the reviewer who said she wouldn't let her child play with it for fear or hurting himself, I have stepped on more plastic toys that have left me screaming in pain than this well sanded shape block.

This toy is fantastic. It is a good old-fashioned shape-sorter, and my kids, ages 1 and 2 love to play with it. My 2 year old daughter even asks for them excitedly, "shapes, mommy? shapes?". I saw a couple reviews that made it seem like a negative that the top doesn't stay on. Part of the fun my kids have is taking the top off, pulling out the individual shapes, then replacing them in the box with the lid. My two year old pulls them out one at a time and tries to name each shape as she takes it out. It may only be used occassionally as a true shape sorter- the kids don't always find the holes to put the shapes back in- but I don't really let that bother me. They are learning and discovering in their own way. If you are a fan of old-fashioned, simple learning and fun, you will love this toy like my family already does!

I just bought this for my daughter for Christmas. I haven't given it to her yet when I read the reviews. It piqued my curiosity so I opened the product. Sure enough the lid falls off. However, I used one of the suggestions of using velcro. Voila! It works beautifully. Then I tested the shapes. Although I agree with the few reviews about there being a good lesson when objects fit in their unintended holes, I found that Melissa and Doug must have listened to everyone's reviews because the shapes fit only into their intended holes. My suggestion: return yours, if possible, and purchase the new version and buy some velcro.

I've been buying toys for my boys for 15 years now and this is by far the best toy we have ever had. When my 26 month old saw it last Christmas morning, it was the only toy he was interested in all day. He worked on it for 6 hours without stopping, finally falling asleep with his head on it. A year later he still plays with it at least 2-3 times per week. He mastered the shape sorting in a day or so and then went on to naming the shapes, learning colors, and building with the blocks. The lid does come off but he slams it back on. Someone pogoed on the lid and it cracked but did not break. The little one stands on it and it doesn't break. The blocks are well loved. The plastic shape sorters don't hold a candle to this one and he thinks they are just boring. After this box he can sort anything. I also think this toy is attractive and don't mind having it sitting around.

This is a very high quality toy - nice hard, thick wood, very clean looking and simple. The colors for the painted pieces are vibrant, but classy. Looks great in a nursery.

This toy goes beyond your basic shape sorter, including a pentagon, a hexagon, a trapazoid, and a rhombus. It's good for kids beyond toddler years, because it's a tiny bit more difficult. The rhombus and diamond are hard for little ones to tell apart. The 4 and 5 year olds I nanny for love it, and have memorized the names of the different "new" shapes. The 19-month old can figure it out with some concentration and a little help.

The top area that opens up isn't attached in any way, which is good for little fingers trying to figure out how to open it... but also frustrating when little ones turn the box upside down when looking the the right hole, only to have that unfastened side slide off and all their shapes fall out.

Overall, a great toy. I love it as a 23 year old, and I would have loved it as a 3 year old! (...)Unbelievable!

My daughter has warmed to this toy over time. It's not a huge favorite, but she finds it challenging and interesting, and she's learned a *lot* more from it than she did from the simple plastic shape sorter she got bored with.

One of the things I really like about this toy is that it's not just about the One Right Answer. My daughter (now 2-1/2) experiments with different ways to insert the same shape, and learns something about generic versus specific solutions. There is much value in the notion that only the star can go through the star-shaped hole, but the star and many other blocks can pass through the rectangular one.

Similarly, the fact that the lid can fall off used to annoy her. But it also taught her to adapt to it, and now she either holds the lid on or turns the box in such a way as to not drop it off.

I admit she found this toy frustrating early on. But it is one of those toys that she revisits every few months, and she plays with it differently over time. Her "plain" shape sorter was a good first lesson for her, but it doesn't have anything new to offer once she figured out how to get the three different shapes into the three different holes. This toy has a lot more to offer over time.

I was suprised to read the negative reviews about this product! My 19-month-old daughter LOVES this toy at her grandmother's house! The problem with the lid coming off was EASILY remedied by applying stick-on velcro to two of the tabs on the lid. (Get some imagination, people!!) My little girl got quickly bored with the four-shape plastic shape sorter. I have been amazed at how quickly she has learned the names of the shapes and where they go. I am recommending this toy to the other grandmother to have at her house!!

29.) USE VELCRO and all is well, and you have a great toy!
Reviewed by: C. Farrelly Everywhere, USA

I have read so many reviews about people complaining about the top lid being loose. And, I agree that this should be addressed in any future making of this product. BUT, this is SO easy to fix. Go to the store, but some stick-on velcro and cut two small pieces to fit on two of the sides of the lid (I say two sides, because I did all four, and I actually had a hard time prying off the lid, ironic)! :-) This fixed the problem and the shape-sorter works great.

I have also read some reviews about the shapes fitting other holes. I don't know if they got one that was defective, but I took my shapes and tried this, and it IS NOT possible, at least with mine.

Also, the point of this shape-sorter is to be more difficult than the average, this is for a slightly older toddler. I bought this for my son (who just turned 3) because he love sorting shapes, but the "baby" ones were too simple. So, he is really enjoying this one. There are shapes that he gets frustrated with and then needs help, but I would only consider this a positive, because it is a great learning opportunity! In fact, I would have been disappointed in this toy if there hadn't been some difficutly.

Finally, I would address the size of the pieces. I know one reviewer said they could fit in her childs mouth. I am looking at mine and think this might be possible, but I could not see any child being able to even attempt to swallow one. They are just too large.

So, I would really recommend this toy. I know you now have the "hassel" of putting on the velcro, but it takes no time, and completely takes away the frustration of having the lid fall off, thus making this a great toy. This is the only reason I gave the toy 4 stars, if the lid didn't fall off, it would be 5.

My son received this as a present for his first birthday. He just turned two and is still playing with it on a regular basis.

It has absolutely helped his to learn his shapes, but we have had to do some facilitating and helping (instead of just putting the toy in front of him and letting him have at it). I don't consider this a minus--perhaps some parents do?

I believe he still plays with this toy because it still challenges him. And there is nothing he loves more than to dump out the shapes (this is where the unattached lid comes in handy!), then spend several minutes working to find the right holes to fit the blocks. This toy is also one of the first to come out when he has friends over; the toddlers I've observed really seem to enjoy it.

My kids (girl ages 2-1/2 and boy 1-1/2) have had lots of fun with this toy. The older (girl) got it when she was about a year old. The only negative I have observed with their play is that sometimes when the shapes have collected at the bottom of the toy they preclude/obstruct adding other shapes into the box. As for the top coming off, that hasn't seemed to bother the kids at all. It IS a more advanced shape sorter, but since we already had a simple "3-shape" sorter toy it has been a fun challenge for the children.

I gave this toy to my daughter when she was 16 months old (knowing full-well that the recommended age was 2 years). She took to it immediately, and with a little help was soon putting all the shapes in the correct holes. I did have to hold the lid down for her and turn the cube so that the proper hole was on top. This is the one annoying feature about the toy design - because the lid won't stay on if the cube is turned, an adult has to assist. But it has become one of our favorite activities to do together, and now at 22 months, she loves it as much as she did when she first got it. And she has learned the names of many obscure shapes: octagon, pentegon, etc. She actually calls the toy "oc-tees" because the octagon is her favorite! In spite of the one design flaw, I love this toy and would recommend it to others. But not all kids may have the patience for the challenge of this type of toy, and certainly perhaps not before the recommended age. Based on reading other customer reviews, I would judge our experience to be unusual.

The top also gets a certain amount of chewing around the corners.

In any case, it's a nice wooden toy, in contrast to many of his other plastic toys and almost all seem to be Made in China. I cringe at the brightly painted pieces and hope that the paint is safe. So many things from China turn out to be tainted, these days. I guess this Shape Sorting Cube is educational in that it can be used to learn shapes and colors and help in counting and reasoning skills. Well, so be it. Will the kid enjoy it as a toy? Who Knows? We'll just have to wait beyond the bashing and chewing stages. Would I have enjoyed it and found it a good learning experience? Probably marginal, at best. So how shall I rate it? I'll give it four stars. My feeling is three, but it hasn't been tested by the boy as yet and my hopes are he would rate it a five.

Okay, there are two varieties of these cubes, and the difference is subtle but significant. We purchased one that looks EXACTLY like the one pictured but the brand was Imaginarium. It's a great classic toy that my 19-month-old loves and can pretty much complete independently. However, the one we bought has a removable side that merely sits in place. Obviously that is a terrible design decision, because when you rotate the cube to reach the other sides, the top falls off, spilling the contents. I had to glue some magnetic strips on it to hold it in place while my daughter plays. There is an almost identical toy (often pictured interchangeably with the ones shown as Melissa & Doug) which has a slide-in-place closing side. That seems like a MUCH better idea! So please do buy this toy, but I advise you to choose the one with the slightly better design, if possible.

46.) Challenging Shape Sorter, Great Toy, Manage the Frustration!
Reviewed by: Colorado reader & parent Colorado Springs, CO

My 22 month old daughter plays with this toy, but there are 2 major sources of frustration.

1) The lid doesn't stay on well - whenever you try to put a shape into the side with the lid, the lid flips over. An older child could probably figure out that you have to hold the lid (or just drop the shape neatly into the hole without touching the lid) - but a younger toddler just isn't going to get that. It is very frustrating. Other people have pointed it out as well - perhaps the designers will respond in version 2. It's needlessly frustrating.

2) Some of the shapes are very similar /complicated - it is frustrating for a young toddler. BUT!!!! my daughter is slightly younger than the recommended age, and, it is a learning toy - it isn't supposed to be immediately easy. Just know that for younger toddlers, you should play with them and help them select the right hole.

A bit of guided play is called for while they are learning and it will increase fun/decrease frustration. My daughter has learned some of the shapes on her own, and is getting 'closer' on some of the others, but I frequently play with her and talk to her about the shapes and help her find where they go.

All in all, it is a good toy. We have several Melissa & Doug toys, and have been pleased with them all. They are safe, high quality, and nice looking. And you can never have too many small, brightly colored pieces of wood underfoot. :)

My son is 2 1/2 years old and we bought this for him last Christmas (2001). We were looking for something along this line and being from Imaginarium I thought it would be good. There's a major error in the design of the toy. The blocks fit in numerous different holes so there's no reason to find the correct hole to put the correct shape in. The rectangle turned sideways fits in at least 3 or 4 different holes.

So, as a learning toy there are other sorting blocks that are much better. My son has more fun throwing the blocks around. He loves to put the blocks in the holes and he does enjoy the toy. It is well made and sturdy, but as an educational toy it is lacking.

I was thrilled to find this Wooden Shape Sorting Cube so it could replace our plastic one. When it came, however, I immediately thought of putting hinges and a snap or closure device on the cover so that we couldn't misplace the top and so that kids could use the top shape sorting panel just as easily as the other sides and that it would remain one whole block. Within the first week my two year old split the cover - it is too week with the shapes cut out of a single unsupported piece. We suspect he either hit it with his toy hammer or steped on it. We're going to have to gorilla glue it so he can play with it again. Conceptually it is wonderful - an oldie but a goodie! Structurally, it could use some work.

We passed on this one and bought a handcrafted no-name shape sorter at a craft fair, mainly because the lid was hinged and our daughter liked that feature (she endlesly opened and closed it). The Mellisa and Doug shape sorter lid is not fixed, and struck me as another element to possibly get lost and diminish the utility of the toy.

At 3-4 yrs old, she was much more intent on finding the matching hole than at 1-2 yrs. Now, she manipulates her doll to put the blocks in.

The plastic shape-sorters? They've been ignored since 18 months. I suspect bad reviews come because the toy is a little too complicated for an infant's first shape-sorter.

We were given this as a baby shower gift and I gave it to my daughter once she was able to sit upright on her own. She has been playing with it for several months. She is not yet at the stage where she is interested in sorting the shapes. She is a big fan of chewing on them and I've noticed the paint has come off on some of the edges. She also likes to put one into a plastic cup (from an Ikea staking cup toy) and shake it around, making noise. Once she started crawling, our little one discovered they quickly slide across the wood floor when she tosses them, and then she loves to retrieve them. I think she likes that the lid comes off easily, because that's the first thing she removes and chews on. Then she drops it on the floor, dumps all the blocks out, and chews on them. Not necessarily its intended purpose! Some of the blocks are smaller than I'd like and I sometimes fear she may choke on them, but I really don't think that is likely.

I suppose that if/when she starts to use it as a shape sorter, she will have to learn to put the shapes that fit into the bottom holes in there first; otherwise, if the bottom of the cube is lined with blocks, you cannot push the star, pentagon, and diamond in (well, maybe a very determined kid could forcefully shove them in and make it work!). I found that to be potentially frustrating myself because it somewhat takes away the fun of randomness out of inserting the blocks.

She (and I) have played with the Fisher Price shape sorter, the plastic one with 4 different shapes (3 pieces of each shape). That one allowed for less creativity because having only four shapes to sort instead of twelve different ones forces the child to learn that one shape fits one hole. If that's what you want, then the Melissa and Doug toy may not be for you, since more than one shape can fit through some of the holes.

The paint on the blocks started chipping the first time we played with them. The lid is made not from the same wood as the rest of the cube but thinner cheaper laminated wood. Where the cut-out holes are, the first laminated layer has chipped away in places. This doesn't prevent the toy from being played with, however, I am much more wary of my daughter trying to put the blocks in her mouth because of the chipped paint, and it's just not going to be as durable as I expected.

We bought this shape sorter for my older son when he was about 18 months old. He'd already been playing with a lightweight plastic one for months, but we liked that this one was wood and had more shapes -- in addition to the basic oval, circle, rectangle, triangle, square, etc., this one has a flower shape, a heart, an octagon, a couple of different triangles, a wedge, parallelogram, etc.

Unfortunately, the shapes fit through any hole in the sorter, so the child isn't really learning much of anything. Plus, the lid is impossible for a small child to keep on while they're playing with it -- even my older son (now 4) has trouble with it!

I've also found that it gets so crowded in there that the shapes don't always fit well when you're fitting in the last few. You need to shake the sorter so that the shapes settle to the bottom. Another issue that I have with this product is, several of the pieces are small enough to fit INTO a small child's mouth -- our younger son, 18 mos, has proven that on several occasions! The plastic ones we have from the other shape sorter are all a bit larger than these pieces, and I think safer. We keep this shape sorter up on a high shelf, to be played with on a rainy day with supervision. It's not a toy I'd leave out for everyday play.

I commend Melissa and Doug for the nice variety of shapes this cube offers as well as its classic wooden toy appearance, but that being said, actual use of this cube is cumbersome and faulty. A bit too heavy for tiny hands to turn and look for the appropriate hole, it also becomes frustrating when the lid falls off (no latch or hinge to keep it on) or it is almost full with blocks and you are trying to push in one of the shapes in the lower portion of the cube and it won't go in because there are blocks inside sitting on the bottom. If the lid latched, you could turn the sides facing up and easily insert the shapes, but not so. I sold my daughter's on ebay and got her the classic plastic Playskool one that has a snap lid and that is lighter weight so she can turn and tumble, looking for the right hole for the shape she has.

This seems to be both of those at first glance. However, when you watch how the kids use this, you realize that they are not learning much. Most of the shapes fit through the hole corresponding to another shape. For instance, the long triangle slides easily through the circle's hole.

Perhaps an older child that knows that you only score points when you play by the rules would be able to use this as intended. Otherwise, my child uses the basic Fisher Price plastic shape sorter (4 shapes, each goes in only if placed in the right hole). That taught her what shape sorters are meant to, and she's very good at it!

First, I should say that they must have recently adjusted the design because the lid on the one we just got slides into place, unlike the picture. We had a really great wooden shape sorter Shape Sorting Box by Selecta that our son starting losing interest in after quickly learning how to put all of the shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) into the correct slots. He loved it and will still play with it, but we thought a new challenge might be good for him. This new box is a bad design because even his mother and father who have advanced degrees cannot easily tell the shapes apart perfectly. The parallelogram is so similar to the diamond, both are even yellow, that I have no idea whose toddler wouldn't get frustrated with the toy before learning how to play with it. Also, he is easily distracted by the slots on the sides and front and top that if one shape isn't fitting, he'll give up quickly and go to another slot and then lose interest. I like the idea of having a couple of more complex shapes, but this is ridiculous. Also, the blocks won't fit into even the correct holes sometimes because it fills up and then a new block won't drop in all the way. I am sure I am forgetting several other things that are irritating - bottom line is that you should keep looking for a better shape sorter.

My daugher's speech therapist has a Playskool form fitter (shape sorter) and it is much better but I can't seem to find it in stock anywhere. It is plastic and the lid snaps shut. This item has been recalled in Canada, along with the shape pound a peg and sorting stacker, and several other products for barium. I wish I had known this months ago. My child had all 3 items.

I purchased this toy thinking like everyone else that it seemed great in the box. However, outside the box it is useless. The top does not stay on. I called Melissa & Doug and informed them of the flaw in the product. They explained that they did not attach the cover out of fear of little fingers being caught in the "door" when child tries to close the top. I am still sure there are work arounds. I personally LOVE Melissa & Doug products, but NOT this product. They have a great customer service!

Very Cute.
Doesn't work.
My son puts any shape he wants into any hole which defeats the purpose of the toy. The best shape sorter I had was a clear bucket with 4 basic shapes on the top - I gave it away but wish I could find that one again for my 2nd child. I'm giving this toy away too though I feel badly about offering a toy that does not work as it is intended.

108.) Don't miss the point of this real-life teaching toy

I'm afraid previous posts may fail to properly shed light on the ingenius levels of parody involved in the brilliant design of this "toy." Through its enigmatic skirtings around the core purpose for its existence, it has probably taught children more about the real world than its more properly-functioning competitors could hope to.

From employee laziness and corporate indifference, to "first to market" rush and "committee decisions," your child will learn that life isn't fair, an important and inevitable lesson that overprotective parents often shield from their children until time and age amplify its effects beyond reason. They'll also learn that with a little shove, and a quick peek to make sure no one's any the wiser, you can do something the wrong way, and get the job done in a fraction of the time.

If you're upset that the lid comes off when turned upside down, remember that too often, management will ask you to turn everything upside down, causing the lid to come off and all your blocks to tumble out. Of course, in this case, the blocks will be things like your social life, or 20 other things you're trying to juggle for your other 3 managers. This fantastic toy teaches toddlers that once the boss isn't looking, a shortcut can be sought that will both conserve worker energy (and web-surfing time), while getting the job done pretty much the same way with a minimal amount of thought and effort. This will help relieve stress and save money in the long run when they don't need to purchase self-help CDs, or book time with a therapist or three.

This toy is a wonderful parody of your little one's probable future office life. I plan on getting one for my desk at work as a retro office toy and subtle reminder that good things come to those who know that while everything can fit easily through the rectangular hole with no effort on my part, the boss doesn't know that, and thinks I'm a genius. I recommend sitting your child down with this toy in front of "Office Space" available here in the DVD section.

my child received this as a gift but i do not recomend you buy this item. is a wooden box with sharp edges, my husband tripped on this box and cut his knee, it has since been away from my son and on a shelf. that's all the use we will be giving to it. just the thought of my child hurting himself with this box scares me.
