My two-year old loves this toy! I mix up all the pieces and put them on the wrong posts and she takes great delight in putting them all back where they're supposed to go. This set is great for teaching/reinforcing colors, shapes and numbers. It's made out of sturdy wood like all the Melissa and Doug products and the pieces are easy for little hands to take off and put on.
I had reservations about ordering this because another reviewer had mentioned that the pentagons were tagged with the number 4 and the squares were tagged with the number 5. However, I ordered it anyway and was pleasantly surprised to find that they have apparently rearranged the shapes to fix this problem. On the set I received there is one circle for #1, two rectangles for #2, three triangles for #3, four squares for #4, and five pentagons for #5.
My only regret is that I didn't get this sooner. It's recommended for 2 years and up but I think with supervision it could be introduced from 12-15 months on. By the way, I ordered this with the Melissa and Doug Beginner Pattern Blocks, the Melissa and Doug Geometric Stacker, and the Lauri Pegboard. This stack and sort board and the beginner pattern blocks are definitely my daughter's overall favorites so far.
6.) Fun, Educational, Well Made Wooden Toy.

Another great product from Melissa and Doug. As with all their wooden toys this is extremely well made. It is bright and colourful, and has a number of different educational aspects; Colours, shapes, numbers and also learning to put small objects on a thin shape. I am very impressed with this and although at this age (14 months) my little guy is only really putting the things on randomly I am sure that this will last for quite some time before it loses its appeal for both fun and education. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent toy for small children. It can help your child learn colors, learn shapes, learn to count, and learn to sort. When I bought this toy, I hesitated because I thought it was so simple that my daughter would figure it out and then move on to something else. But I was wrong.
My daughter enjoys putting the pieces onto the correct pegs, or sometimes putting them on the wrong pegs, then looking at me to see my reaction. She also enjoys setting them up on their sides and knocking them down like dominos. She stacks them like blocks and sorts them on the floor by color. She grabs a container of some kind and fills and dumps. She counts them and identifies their colors.
Some other reviewers have raised questions about how some of the shapes correspond to the numbers. I think the circle corresponds to the number one because it has one "side," which is the diameter of the circle. The rectangle has two long sides and two short sides, so it goes with the number two.
9.) my son & his friends like this!

At 27 months, it's hard to get children to sit still, but my son and his friend will sit and play with this, faking us out by pretending to put the block on the wrong peg, then switching to the right one, dropping it on, and looking up to us for approval. We name a color or a shape & ask them to point to the correct stack of blocks and say the word.
Of course, his favorite part is holding it up high and turning it over to dump the blocks all over the floor and slide them around like knock hockey...

This is a nice toy to teach not only stacking but also counting and colors. We bought this toy and the bead and laces toy to help our daughter developmentally. She loves both toys and was able to work with both very quickly. I am very pleased with both toys and would definitely recommend this brand to any other mother of a toddler!

An absolute must for those who wish to provide their children with the perfect level of learning/stimulation via hands on play. Colors/ stacking/ counting/ numbers, what is not to miss? A perfect education toy, and great for advancing those fine motor skills. Very durable, colorful--child loves it--mommy and daddy even love it!
Perhaps this is the first time I have actually seen my 18 mo. old sit down for at least five minutes and attend to one toy!!!
I like the fact that Amazon has the age listed as 2+ (I am sure the packaging said the same, likely it did...). But, this could easily be great for an advanced 12 month old; and definitely wonderful for an 18 month old.
A must have!

We loves this toy. I bought it for my son when 15 months old and he loved it and played with it for about 6 months. This toy is great for most 18 month olds and older. He used to for stacking, sorting, counting, learning shapes, and more. This is one of the best $10 toys you will ever find! That said, if your child knows their shapes, colors, and can count to 15 don't bother as once he mastered that he was done with this toy. This thing is pretty durable, the only marks ours had on it was teeth marks from when one of the dogs thought the triangle would make a good chew toy.

21.) Simple & effective way to teach sorting - colors/shapes/counting
Reviewed by: T. Rodgers
Rating:
The concept of color and counting can be difficult to get across to a child, but this is almost the perfect toy to do that. Our daughter was starting to identify colors (mainly Orange, likely due to her familiarity to the color of the fruit) at about month 20, but we credit this toy with helping her identify the primary colors with consistency.
The only real 'complaint' is that it's not a puzzle that will keep their interest all that long. Obviously, like anything, parental involvement, encouragement and some creative rule changes will make the time spent all the more valuable.

Got this for my 2 year olds birthday because she seemed to be into stacking things. It seems somewhat boring to me... but she really likes it. She definitely has no concept of putting them on their right pegs yet or anything, but I'm hoping this will come with time and playing with it, with her. It has differant game ideas written on the bottom to help you interact with your child and teach her differant aspects of learning. It is interesting to her enough to pick it among other toys to amuse herself with for a good amount of time while I'm busy doing other things, too.
26.) Best stacker/sorter/counter

Love that this is a multipurpose toy. It was great for my toddler when she was into all that shape and color learning, sorting/stacking and then into counting. She was most interested in it between 15-24 months. It's very durable and never sustained the slightest bit of damage in that time.

28.) Paint comes off way too easily
Reviewed by: S. Kellner
Rating:
My son got this for Christmas when he was 10 months old and we found out very quickly that the paint comes off soooo easily! He only has 2 teeth but still obviously puts everything in his mouth - well, those 2 little teeth got a significant amount of paint off whereas his other colored wooden toys have a much more durable paint that does not come off even after minutes of gnawing. Also, we have hardwood floors and when he crawls around when a piece in his hand, the paint inevitably comes off and gets rubbed on the floor, staining it with a streak. There are plenty of other similar toys on the market with more durable paint, i.e. the KID-O brand.
29.) More we play, less excited about the toy
Reviewed by: Mom A. Mia Buffalo, NY
Rating:
As I have played with this toy/puzzle over time, I have developed some criticisms:
1) All of the shapes fit onto all of the pegs. It would be nice if the center cut-out was the same as the shape and the peg was that shape too. My daughter really likes the puzzle-aspect of toys and she seems to not have as much interest in this one because it is so easy to put the shapes on the pegs.
2) There are 3 triangles, 4 squares, and 5 pentagons. The number of objects also corresponds to the number of sides on each object, but there are 2 rectangles (4-sided figure) and 1 circle (no sides) and this doesn't make sense.
Sure, my daughter and I can talk about the names of the shapes and the colors. Other than that the toy is not very engaging. It's durable and wooden, but otherwise lacking interest.
30.) How about using the square for number 4?
Reviewed by: Jeremy M. Christensen Las Vegas, NV United States
Rating:
How about using the square for the number 4 and the pentagon for the number 5? They could also use the circle for number 1 and a crescent or semi-circle for the numbner 2.
The worst thing about this toy and their clock is that some of the numbers match the number of sides and some don't.
