1.) Large vs. Small
Reviewed by: S. Durham
Rating:
I'm reviewing this just for those of you who might be confused by the large vs. small models. My 2 year old son is pretty small for his age - maybe 25 pounds, maybe 34 inches. He's tiny. So when I saw that the "large" wheely bug is supposedly for 3 years old and up I figured my tiny guy would certainly need the small. Still, I hated to buy the wrong size and then have to ship it back. So I found a store in town that offers wheely bugs and went there to physically have my son try them out. Am I glad I did! The small is so tiny that I cannot imagine it being appropriate for any child. If your child is so small as to need the small version, chances are he or she should not be riding it. Remember, these things do not have seat belts or other safety features. It's a fast-moving ride-on, on chair casters. The small model looks suitable for a stuffed doll, perhaps. My son fits on the large version with no problem. His feet hit the floor flat. He can climb on and off with no difficulty. Also, be aware that this really only rolls well on hardwood floors or other smooth, flat surfaces. It's tough to roll on carpet of any sort - even area rugs. Would work well on a smooth, flat driveway or in an unfinished basement. So please do not hesitate to purchase the large model, unless your child is very young or very, very tiny (maybe shouldn't be on this toy, in that case), and do be sure you have someplace where your child can have fun riding it.

We got this for my daughter's first birthday, and it has been her favorite present. She is a very active child, and loves pushing it around the living room. She is a little small to ride on it yet (her legs don't touch the floor solidly enough), but she seems very content to push it every which way. She loves that it will go any direction she wants without having to use a steering wheel (a result of the castor type wheels). She is also fascinated by the antennae, which bounce around when she bops them. It is also very durable, and the leather covering is well stitched and very strong. I'm sure this toy will last for a long time. It's also nice that it seems to work on just about every surface we've tried (carpet, hard wood floors, deck and reed outdoor carpet). **Update** 4/3/2010 - Our "bug" is now 3 years old and continues to be a favorite toy for both my daughter and her friends. She can still ride it (at almost 4 years old), and it still looks brand new. This is a really excellent poduct.
3.) Good scoot toy

My 22 month old daughter seems to enjoy this toy. She scoots around the house on it a lot. It is a great, smooth ride on wood floors and she is able to go in all directions easily. However, when she hits a rug or carpet, the toy tips over or won't move much at all. I would recommend it if there is plenty of flat floor space available. It seems to be well made and durable.

I purchased my daughter the wheely bug when she was 3, and she loved it so much I had to get the smaller version of the wheely bee for my 1yo son... it was hard for him at first, but now at 18 months he and his big sister ride around the house all...day... long. This thing is something I will keep to pass down to my grandchildren. They absolutely are heirloom quality. I just can't imagine having a plastic junky ride on toy when this is available. It is absolutely the best.
5.) Large vs. Small

I read the reviews before purchasing this item and was leaning towards the large wheely bug because of what another customer wrote. However, I'm glad I saw a picture someone posted of their 11 month old son on the small wheely bug because that ultimately gave me the best information about scale.
My daughter got this when she was 9 months old. She is a shorty at 27", and the small fit her perfectly. She has great balance and loves ride on toys. The comment about a baby small enough to fit the small wheely bug is probably too small for the toy is nonsense. It depends on your child. My daughter absolutely loves this toy.

My nearly 18 month old just got this toy and she likes it quite a bit. She doesn't love it (yet) because she hasn't yet gotten the hang of how to make it "go" while she is sitting on it. But she will figure it out eventually. Meanwhile, Dad and Mom push her around, and she thinks it's great. The omni-directional capability is terrific, so much better than toys that only go forward and back.
We bought the large size in spite of the age recommendation (3-5 yrs,) and it's a good thing we did. Our daughter is tall for her age, but not abnormally so, and she can sit astride this bug with both feet on the ground. If it was any smaller she would outgrow it almost immediately.
This is a cute, fun toy, but wait to get it for your child until after he/she has been walking for 3 months or so. A child needs to possess a certain amount of vertical stability before attempting to play with this toy as it will scoot away from her at the lightest touch.

This is truly an excellent ride-on.
-Its light weight and easy to carry around
-Its sturdy
-Its small enough that it can be tucked away in a corner
-The wheels move freely, and so, baby can navigate turns very easily without having to back out or tipping over

My daughter was 9 months when we got this. She is on the tall side for her age so we got the large size. It was just a tiny bit too big...she could just barely touch her tiptoes while seated. But she loved to stand facing it, holding onto the handlebar and push it around. Now that she is 10 months, she already can touch better while seated and can scoot a little. And she has mastered the mount/dismount.

This is the best toy I've ever bought... by far. It is so well constructed. I got it as a gift for my daughter's first birthday, but I gave it to her early. She has been pushing it around since she was 11 months old. I bought the large after reading the reviews, and although she cannot touch the ground yet...it won't be long. I am happy I got the large because I think she will get more use out of it in years to come. For now, she just pushes it all over the house. We have long carpeting and she has no trouble with it at all. I love that it is easily turned around...I don't have to get her out of tight spots, she can do it herself. We had a wooden Melissa and Doug push toy, but she could not turn it around. So someone had to be at each end, and she'd go in a straight line back and forth. With this one, she can go every which way. I wish we'd had it sooner, I think she might have even walked earlier. Well worth every penny!!!!!!!!

My four year old daughter got this for Christmas. Her little sister already had the small sized ladybug that she hardly ever got to ride it because the 4 year old was constantly stealing it--in fact the biggest problem we had with our original one was that the kids fought over it! Adding the second larger one has been great--they ride them frequently (multiple times a day) and have regular parades and races. The bigger size is perfect for the 4 year old and the smaller size perfect for my 2 year old, even my 7 year old gets on the large sized cow a couple times a week and takes it for a spin. They can turn in circles which is great fun and kinder to the cabinets and furniture (they can more quickly turn on a dime to avoid obstacles). They are incredibly sturdy and well made and the little horns move and are really cute. A little pricey but totally worth it-they stand up to hard use and are incredibly fun and they do not sit in the closet and collect dust. Is so well made that I anticipate selling or giving them away when the kids eventually outgrow them. Highly recommend.

My daughter received a small for her 1st birthday, and is now 3. She still plays with this almost every day. I know it is for indoor use only, but a few times it has made its way outside, and even survived the rough neighbor boy who decided it would make a great ride down the sloped driveway. (Not recommended!!!!!!) But the point being, it survived intact.
So, we're going on using it for 2 1/2 years now, and I am even considering buying the replacement large, as this toy will be surely missed when the girls outgrow "her". My 5 1/2 year old also loves "her" -- and she is TALL. DD5 is clearly too tall for the small, but likes to just scoot around once in a while on her.

He pushed it all around the house with one hand while crawling, Yes, of course he is too small to actually ride it, but it is a great toy for him to push all around and see how wheels work. Our son is an average size baby (50th percentile); he weighs ~ 23 pounds and is ~30 inches tall and the large size is perfect for him to push around. When we sit him on it his feet just touch the ground. (The small size Wheely Bug must be microscopic; I can't imagine what child would use it.)

Our grandson has yet to really get the hang of riding it, but he loves to push it around. Older kids love it, too, as it moves so easily in all directions due to its caster wheels. It travels well on all surfaces. My daughter is able to ride from hardwood floors, over our throw rugs, and back onto the hardwood again, without skipping a beat. I wouldn't try it outside, though... I think the concrete would scratch up the plastic wheels too much. The surface material is very easy to clean. I bought this for my daughter when she was 1 y/o. She didn't start to actually ride on it until she was about 15 months old...but before that she had a blast holding onto the handlebar and pushing it around the house! It was a great hit at her party!! Her 3 y/o nephew had to be forced to get off of it and went home asking for a "bug" for himself.

The wheels on this ride-on toy are just like on an office chair which makes it very easy for her to get around as compared to other ones she's tried that only go forward and backward and not side to side. My 2 year old nephew loves this toy too which tells me it will be used for a years rather than months, which is always nice. The only downfall to this toy is that since it is so easy to move, when she decides to try to stand on it to reach something she shouldn't have it tends to fly out from under her, but she's learning that quick!

I did quite a bit of online research before purchasing this BEE for my 20 month old daughter. I have been wanting to get a ride-on toy for some time, something she could use inside. We got the LARGE version (she is currently 24 lbs and average height) and was given to her as a 'prise' one morning. She immediately got on it, and started wheeling around. Each day she rides on it around the house and is always saying 'BEEE."
Last week, her grandmother bought her an electric Dora car, which she did enjoy. But after riding it a few times, she got off, pulled out her BEE and started riding on it. She likes the Dora electric car, but LOVES the Bee. I highly recommend it as a non-plastic, very friendly toy and I wish I had gotten even a few months earlier.
UPDATE: 1/26/2010. Our daughter is now almost 2.5 years old. We had rain rain rain over the last few weeks so had one of our playgroups meet at an indoor mall. All the kids brought their ride on toys. Kettler push bikes, Radio Flyer, you name it. Every kid wanted to ride THE BEE. The little girls all around 2 years old took turns on it -- my daughter became quite upset because she wanted to ride it too and sharing at this age is more of a concept than reality. I've read a lot of comments about the small Wheely Bug being too small for most children - and I think that's crazy. I bought the small Wheely Bug for a one year-old's first birthday, and while it took her a month or so to get the hang of climbing onto it, she was able to push it around right away. Now that she's 14 months old, she loves climbing aboard and starting to scoot it around with her little feet (which just touch the ground). Now for those of you worried that a toddler won't be able to use it for long, let me tell you that her almost 5 year-old sister uses the small Wheely Bug DAILY. She whizzes around the hardwood floors like she's on a racetrack. The Wheely Bug has such great dexterity of movement that she can spin in circles while zooming across the floor. She is an average sized girl of almost five who still loves the small Wheely Bug. In fact, she has begged me to get her a large-sized Wheely Bug for her 5th birthday coming up - and I'm going to do that. This toy can easily be adapted by older kids who learn to push off and then prop their feet up while they whiz by. It's a GREAT toy and I'm so happy to have found it.
So for you parents wondering what size to get, follow the product recommendations (1.5+ for small, 3 years for large) and have no worries. You'll be happy with the investment.

After reviewing the dozens of suggestions that I purchase large to avoid tears and short lived use of the bug, I feel that I should set the story straight for parents looking for the right size "ride on" toy for their child. My daughter received this bug when she was 17 months old and in the 90th percentile for height. I believed that, surely, my daughter could ride with ease after the other parents had described how unreasonably tiny the small was. Unfortunately, her feet do not rest flat on the floor and she is unable to ride the bug effectively. Since her feet do not set flat and the handle bar is fairly low, she simply scoots off the back of the bug and pushes it through the house.
She does LOVE the Wheely Bug, as do I, but I did want to clear up any confusion. The large sized bug should be purchased for 3+ year old children and the small sized bug for younger toddlers to make riding the toy possible. Now, there might be exceptions and my daughter is by no means a risk taker or dare devil, but if you would like to see your younger toddler ride the bug...I would opt for a small. Sure, it looks small, but consider that they must straddle the plump little bug and have their tiny feet flat on the floor to really maneuver the adorable thing. If your child really prefers to push toys, the large is the way to go and perhaps he/she will ride it once they are older. I am glad that I went with the large for this reason.
Great toy that really is very attractive to young children. I am very happy with my purchase, but do feel the bug is slightly over priced when considering its simplicity...no flashing lights, sounds, motor. All in all, the bug is incomparable to other push toys, ride-on toys, and any other toys in general. This bug will be a winner in your home, guaranteed.

The base of the bug is made of sturdy wood and the wheels are basic casters which we've been able to use on all the floor surfaces in our home. In all it is a very well made toy and should be fun for my daughter to use for some months to come.

Do not let the age label fool you. The large size is fine for tall little ones and not just for the 3-5 age group.
The good: Wheely Bee turns in all directions, so it's much less frustrating for a toddler to escape from a corner or tight spot. The design is so simple yet elegant and attractive; it's retro and modern. It's lightweight! Although the description says 6lb., it feels less than 5lb. in your hand, and you can haul this ride-on easily in your car to take to the park. Other tots will be instantly curious and attracted to it, so beware for whomever is riding it. It's pretty sturdy: I rode on it, and I am above the 50lb. limit.
The bad: It's easy to slip off the back (beware!). The casters aren't suited for rough or uneven outdoor surfaces. The price is a little high compared to other ride-ons.
The ugly: none.

I can't imagine how small the small size must be. Everything about this toy is just about perfect except for the height of the handlebars. I would like them to be about 4 inches higher. I think they would still be comfortable for most babies, I've noticed in most of the pictures, the babies hands are reaching pretty far down to grab the bar, so I don't think it's just because my baby is tall. I LOVE that the wheels turn so easily. They toy is much lighter weight than I expected, which is nice. It's still heavy enough to keep baby from getting ahead of himself. The drawbacks are in the quality. I've been so unimpressed. The similar toys I paid half as much for are much more durable. One of the wheels snapped off shortly after we got it--which I discovered only as it was ridden across my hardwood floor sans wheel, leaving huge gauges. I found a place to reorder replacement wheels and it was easy to replace. Then a week or so later I saw the whole body (where the child sits) was caving in. I thought it might be a defective model since all the reviews I'd read were so positive. It was still in the warranty period so I exchanged it. I thought maybe the older boys were too big but in looking back at the recommended sizes, they were actually even just barely big enough! With the second model I've already replaced two wheels and a third just broke the other day. The small plastic piece that holds the wheel on just snaps. At least the fix is easy, but it seems like a design flaw. My kids do love the toy--the wheels that turn every direction make it a popular choice-- but I'd expect better quality for the price.
So, if you want a trendy looking toy to sit in your living room, this is great. If you have kids that actually want to use the toy, be prepared to be constantly replacing wheels. (And look out for your hardwood floors)

We also have a 4-year-old son who rides on it occassionally. To my disappointment they were not too excited about it. This May my mom bought a Tonka Truck sit and scoot for $5.00 at a yard sale and brought it over. I thought, "Great, another duplicate toy to add to our collection," but to my surprise both boys were all over it. They even fight over riding on it. This Tonka Truck sit and scoot has a little horn, steering wheel, flashing blinkers, and music which both boys love. My in-laws also have a Winnie the Pooh sit and scoot (which I couldn't find any more, since it was purchased 3 years ago) that they bought for my 4-year-old and they love that one too. Every time they go to their grandparents house they fight over it. So I was dissapointed that we paid so much money for something that just looks cute. I'd say save your money and buy one with lights, sounds, storage, etc. The Wheely Bug doesn't have any of those features.
