This was the first toy I got for my 3 y old daughter so she can learn to write and it was awesone she learn to write the letters in less than a month. I sat with her at the biginnig but then I found her playing with it by herself many times. The only thing is that it only have the upper case letters not the lower. But it was a very good toy!

We received this as a gift for my son's 5th birthday. My son has Autism, and until we got this toy he had no interest in writing letters. Now, he turns it on and comes to get me to help him write. He still isn't doing it independently, but with my hand guiding him, he's getting better at writing. Most importantly, he's excited about writing now. I've begun having him use the toy to give him the instruction, but write the letter on paper instead of the toy's pad. This will help him transition to writing in school.

My 3.5 year old loves this toy! When he write's wrong its says "good practice" when its write it says "Great Job". He loves it. I wish it did lover case letters, but being that my child has parents and grandparents that are teachers of young children, and he goes to preschool, I'm not worried too much about him getting that.

My daughter just loves this toy. She is 3 and it is something that will grow with her, it allows her to learn her letters, draw shapes and also doodle - it makes learning really fun and we both really enjoy it together, it's great in the car on trips too! Great buy for the money and I would give this as a gift also because it's really fun and for some reason kids just love the big yellow pencil character on it very cute!

My developmentally disabled 6 year old LOVES this toy. He got it last Christmas, it has been used and abused and still works like new. It helped him develop an interest in drawing and writing that he did not have before (due to his lack of fine motor control). It not only teaches letters, but encourages the kids to draw objects too, like a queen and an igloo. Awesome toy!

I bought this for my 3 year old at Christmas. It was one of the less expensive ones I bought, yet my son LOVES it and has played with it for a while now. It does lots of stuff. It teaches you how to draw letters and objects that start with all the letters. It is pretty cool. I love that the little writing "pencil" easily goes back in it's slot using a magnet. It is nice and compact to bring in the car with your child and my son really enjoys it. Highly recommend!

Purchased the Write & Learn for my 4 year old son to help his writing skills in a fun interactive way and have been very happy with the results! It holds his attention longer then schooling him with our books and he even uses it on his own! i also like the art function that teaches him to draw certain words. I have seen more confidence and less frustration in how he expresses himself with art now, let alone his writing has improved. Great practice for school right here and at such a value! it's worth ever penny and more and has served it's purpose so well in my opinion! :)

I've purchased several of these Vtech-Write & Learn Letter Pads as gifts for nephews, nieces, and friends' children. I always hear that the Vtech is very much used and enjoyed. My own kids also very much like to use it. The Write & Learn is a great addition to our kids' educational toys. It's also nice to have in the rotation for plane and long car rides. I highly recommend it!

I have a 1,2 and 3 year old. They swing it around, scrape the writing pad until it is totally filled in, and my 3 year old is getting into writing the letters. They were able to break the battery cover to where it had to be taped on. It definitely takes a beating, and requires some supervision among siblings. We use it in our van exclusively now.

15.) Our opinion

We ordered this toy after reading some of the reviews. We were looking forward to having our son start using this toy to help him improve his writing skills. We were disappointed to find out that the writing recognition technology (even though it works great) does not recognize the correct letters written. For example, we were practicing the letter G. We wanted to see what happened if we entered a wrong letter. After entering an "A" instead of "G" and pressing the check mark, the toy claimed a correct response. This is very misleading for young writers. Other things we did not like about the toy were its tiny screen and the fact that it only teaches upper case letters. We did like the fat grip pen and the spoken and visual directions. Over all the toy is fun and education, but we would like to see Vtech fix or improve these issues.

Thanks

My 3 year old son got this for Christmas. I really like it and think it's a great toy---it shows them how to draw/write and then has an area to draw it themselves. My son likes it although he wants to watch me do it but hopefully as he gets older he'll feel more comfortable doing it himself. I do wish it had a volume control on it b/c there are times it could be a little quieter. Overall I am very pleased with this and do recommend....especially for the price.

18.) Very cool toy for learning to write

We have two toys that teach writing, the L-max game "letters on the loose" and this game (which is far less expensive by comparison). There are pros and cons to both...

I like this one because it is not such a stickler for precicison, in fact it doesn't have the ability to know when you have done it wrong, so any time a letter or shape is tried, it congratulates you. With the L-max, if you don't get it within a certain range of correctness it makes you start over! Sometimes with a very young child that can be discoraging, but as my son gets older I will probably come to appreciate the feature more.

This toy lets you draw letters, shapes and pictures- which is a nice change up and then you can see what you have done on the screen and once complete the shape "wiggles". The only problem is that if the child does not press hard enough the image does not fully appear on the screen.

Another issue is that I will worry that the cord that the pencil is connected with will fray or break off, but that is a long ways off (I hope.)

I bought this toy couple days ago because I will be giving it to a child in a toys for tots program that I signed up for. I like this toy because it seems very educational from my initial view. I paid $20 for this toy at Kmart and Im suprised to find it here for $79, I had to do a double take, but it is the same exact toy. Other than that it seems like a good buy...just dont think its worth all that money.

My 4 year old little girl really likes this toy. Infact, my 2 1/2 year old really likes it too. This toy seems to really entertain them for awhile. The only thing I don't like is the toy does not check to make sure the child correctly writes the letter or shape. If the toy prompts the child to make a R and the childs makes a S, the toys gives praise. Infact, it doesn't matter what the child writes the toy give praise when they press the check button. Just realize that this toy does not check for accuracy, but it does give good instruction to the child for making letters or shape. Overall I'm very pleased I made the purchase.

24.) fun toy but...........

This toy is fun for my 3 year old. It asks the child to draw letters or shapes, but no matter what he writes on the board, the voice still tells him he's done a great job. For example, if it asks you to draw a circle and you draw a square instead, it still praises you. Don't get me wrong, my 3-year-old still loves it; he doesn't care. I can't complain for $8.

26.) Boys: Tough on Toys
Reviewed by: GA shopper

I found the toy, originally, on the toy aisle of a grocery store. Cheaper than Amazon price, and worth every cent.

My two boys are age 3 and 4.5 and they love to play the letter pad everywhere. They most often take it in the car since it's small and portable enough to play in their lap/carseat. My youngest son, carries it by the pen, which has not yet detached from the unit as he carries it and bangs it around on the floor, doors, and everything else.

It also got wet once and still works. They love all the options for different animated games (shapes, letters, and doodling) and since one child is able to identify and write his letters and the other isn't yet, they can teach each other and learn together with guidance and praise.

The only thing I can see as a drawback, is that there is NO volume adjustment so there is one volume (which is kind of loud--especially in an enclosed vehicle).

Great toy. Highly recommend it.

I came across this item in a toy store and I was SO excited because my (nearly) 3 year old son has been showing an interest in writing his letters and numbers. I do think this the toy IS really cute, and my son would probably enjoy it. However, I decided to test it first. And I was initially delighted when it spoke back to me (knowing my son would like that). What stopped me from purchasing it though, was when I intentionally wrote a letter wrong to see what it would say, it told me "good job" or something to that effect. I'm still unsure if that's a good thing or bad thing (?) So that has made me hesitant to buy it, although I am still considering doing so...

I think it would be great if it included lower case letters and numbers.

28.) Toy too positive
Reviewed by: NKM
Rating:
I have not given my daughter this toy yet, but was somewhat disappointed when I received it and played around with it. It shows you how to draw a letter or shape and then asks you to draw it. I tried drawing the letter or shape completely wrong and it still told me I did great or it was very good practice. It could at least say, "not quite" or "try again". I am afraid that whatever my daughter draws, based on the toy's feedback, she will think she drew the correct thing, when in fact she may not have.

29.) Love it, but too loud

This toy is decent for the price. My biggest gripe is that the battery compartment does not screw on. My almost 3 year old is quite capable of removing the cover and batteries. I've had to put it away for the time being because of this.

31.) No Screw on Battery Cover

33.) Scribble echoes make writing difficult to see
Reviewed by: Fireflies
Rating:
I was dissapointed in this toy. My daughter needs handwriting practice (age 6). But the toy leaves behind a lighted echo of the previous letters your child writes. After a few letters, the lines begin to blend together and the child can't see clearly what they're writing anymore. After some use (a few days), the screen begins to misread the child's writing. It's a wonderful idea but it needs some work. Without a "clear" screen free of echoes of previous letters - your child can't see clearly what they are writing. Which defeats the purpose of teaching them how to precisely write their letters. :(

I returned ours to the store.

34.) This toy could be great
Reviewed by: JMama
Rating:
This toy has a really great idea. The problem is that it always says that they did a great job, even if they did not draw the letter or shape correctly. If the toy would tell them to try again when they got it wrong, then I would give it 4 stars.
